Female Vaginal Yeast Infection

Any woman can get a vaginal yeast infection , it makes no difference what color, race, religion or age she is. There is in fact already some yeast in the vagina but under certain circumstances it can multiply. Some women are unfortunately predisposed to yeast infections because of suppressed immune systems and other factors can cause the overgrowth such as oral contraception, medical conditions like diabetes, or hormonal times like pregnancy, menstruation and menopause. There are also some hygiene products that can lead to a candida infection in some women too. Douching can cause it, as well as perfumed products.

It is worth noting that though a yeast infection can be sexually transmitted it does not come under the category of being an STD. A yeast infection can be fairly easily cured as it is just an overgrowth of candida which naturally lives in the vagina. How to find out whether your yeast is over growing is by looking for the yeast infection symptoms. Do stay aware though that some symptoms of a yeast infection could be symptoms of other ailments.

Common symptoms of a candida infection are vaginal itching, pain (when urinating and during sex) burning and a discharge that looks like cottage cheese in consistency and in color. Definite diagnosis can be achieved via a scraping taken by your doctor though there is a method to do at home. Put a glass of water next to your bed at night and the next morning when you get up, spit a couple of times into it. After a little time has passed if your spit disappears into the water you do not have a yeast infection. But if it sinks to the bottom and has a stringy and cloudy appearance it is possible you are infected. The longer it takes your spit to show those signs though, the milder the infection is.

When you are correctly diagnosed and know how severe you have it you can look at treating it. You doctor will help here but make sure you follow whatever treatment regime you choose through. Do not stop just because the symptoms have gone as depending on the severity it can take two to six months to actually clear an infection. If you have recurring problems look at your diet, other possible root causes and consider alternative treatments.
