There are three reasons why someone might ask about natural treatments for a yeast infection. Firstly, the drugs have not worked, secondly they don't want to use a treatment that is drug based, or thirdly they have experienced horrible side effects from the drugs. However going down the natural road is not just about finding something out of your kitchen cupboard that you can eat or apply.

Causes - Candida albicans are a micro-organism fungus that live in the body naturally. Usually it is kept under control by the good bacteria in your body but sometimes things can happen that upset the balance (an underlying condition for example) and this leads to the candida over growing. That is what causes a yeast infection.

Underlying conditions - The more common ones are diabetes, prolonged use of antibiotics, a low immune system, birth control pill, steroids, menstruation, drug use, pregnancy, some medical conditions and douching. Although that over growth of Candida albicans causes the yeast infection, it is the underlying condition that allows it to overgrow in the first place. Without that it could never multiply.

Pharmacutical treatments - Usually a drug based treatment is an anti-fungal that is applied to the infected region and is designed to target the symptoms of the yeast infection not the root cause. Also if over used the Candida can become resistant to them the result then being many sufferers have a recurring infection. Some people also experience side effects from the treatments that are worse then the symptoms of the infection itself.

Natural treatments - They are becoming increasingly popular as a lot of natural things have antiseptics, anti inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Some can be eaten, some are applied and when the right ones are used they can be very effective. Common choices are tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic, curds, plain yogurt, olive leaf/grapefruit seed extract, buttermilk and the herbs black walnut and oregano. That is just a selection of many.

Unless you identify and target the underlying condition the natural treatments are not going to completely clear you up, or they may take care of the symptoms but the infection becomes recurring. Look at your diet as well as any other issues you may have to get clear once and for all.
